Trauma Therapy

What is trauma?

"Trauma" seems to be a buzzword in our society and can be commonly overused. However, trauma is generally thought of to be a reaction to a threat of death, or serious injury to self or another person. While this is true and those types of situations occur frequently and have a serious impact on the quality of life of the person experiencing the trauma, the same effects can occur in people experiencing less severe or and more chronic situations.

Trauma

Trauma survivors so often feel that they have to deal with their experiences on their own and manage the pain they are experiencing without help because the events happened in the past and they are supposed to "get over it."  This may be helpful with some events in life, but not trauma.

Here is an example of how connected our brains are to the world around us... Have you ever smelled a vanilla candle burning and instantly envisioned your grandma's sugar cookies baking in the oven and remembered everything about a certain day or time with your grandma?  Hopefully that is a very positive, warm memory; but think for a minute what that would be like if it was not a warm memory, but instead was filled with fear, shame, insecurity, and hopelessness.  That is how easily people can be triggered to relive horrific events from the past.

Trauma is treatable with therapy and support.  People with extensive and complex trauma histories do recover and become stronger and more resilient than they were in the past. We would love to help you on that journey to recovering from past events.

Couples Therapy

Why go to couple's therapy?

Many people have a negative opinion of couples therapy, but it can be beneficial for couples at any stage of their relationship.  Communication, safety, and intimacy are important in every relationship. Improving those areas can significantly increase the value and benefits of relationships.

Research shows that contempt in a relationship is detrimental to physical health.  Couples therapy helps to alleviate contemptuous feelings that are so destructive to the body. People with happy relationships tend to live longer and feel successful in life.

"If I have to go to couples therapy, my relationship must be over, right?"

There are many people that share this belief but it is simply not true.  If both partners are willing and open to changing how they communicate within the relationship, progress can be made.

"Is therapy over if we decide to separate or divorce?"

Not necessarily.  Therapy can be very beneficial for navigating complex separations because it allows for feelings to be processed and decisions to be made within the relationship so each person has the opportunity to have their needs met.

"We fight all the time! How can I see a future when we can't even talk about little problems?"

This is a common comment that is made right at the start of therapy! Many people believe that the frequency of conflict is indicative of the success of a relationship; if we don't fight, we must be happy, right? Wrong. Many high-conflict couples are able to do the work to understand each other's perspective and rebuild connection with their partner. The goal of therapy should never be to not have conflict, rather to learn to grow through conflict and develop a deeper, more meaningful connection with a partner. Healing relationship trauma is an essential part of building or rebuilding intimacy.

Couples Therapy

Weekly/Biweekly/Monthly

This type of therapy has many perks! This is what most people think of when they hear "couples therapy." Generally 1-hour sessions once per week, once every other week, or once per month. Usually covered by insurance plans (we only accept commercial plans), and individualized to meet the needs of each couple.

Workshops

Workshops are not technically considered therapy, but they are psychoeducational in nature. Our workshops are comprised of a maximum of 5 couples and focus on skill building and education on topics related to relationships. Our workshops often have a theme (Veterans, first responders, newlyweds, etc) and focus on specific issues related to the theme. Workshops are not covered by insurance.

Intensives

Intensives are just as they sound... intense! Intensives are 6 hours of psychoeducation, skill building, problem solving, empathy building, and self regulation. Intensives may be covered in part by insurance but do have an out of pocket cost as well. One intensive may be beneficial, however some clients choose to schedule subsequent sessions using the intensive model, or switch to weekly therapy.

Massage Therapy as a Tool for Healing

Massage therapy can be so much more than a luxurious and pampering experience! Many of our clients (and others in the community) have experienced events that are unimaginable and change the way the brain responds to the world. One way our brains learn about the world and our place in it is through touch. When someone has experienced a trauma (or adverse life event) the effects of that event tend to be stored in the body as tension. There are also times where those events cause an aversion to being touched or feeling numb or as if their body doesn't belong to them. Massage therapy (with a trusted and trauma-informed massage therapist) can help to release some of the tension stored in the body. This is not a cure but trauma is best viewed through a holistic lens, which includes various modalities of healing and connection with the brain and body! We would love to answer any questions prior to your appointment!

For now, we are offering massage days once per month and will publish a 2025 schedule very soon! Our November 2024 massage day is November 16, 2024.

*Disclaimer: If you are currently in trauma therapy or any somatic therapy, please consult your therapist and doctor before choosing massage therapy. Also, be sure to clearly communicate any potential triggers that you are aware of with your massage therapist. We all want you to have the best experience possible!
